CIF-SS baseball, softball playoffs open this week

The CIF-Southern Section baseball playoffs began early this week with wild card play, preceding first round action that begins May 22-23. Results will be updated as soon as possible online.

The baseball schedule:

—Division 1 (May 21, Wild Card): Chaminade beat West Ranch 5-0; Mater Dei beat Valley View 7-4; Crespi beat Long Beach Poly 6-2; Alemany beat Saugus 5-4.

—Division 1 (May 23, first round): J.Serra vs. Brea Olinda; Loyola vs. Corona; Santa Margarita vs. Mission Viejo; Mater Dei vs. Capistrano Valley; Crespi vs. Agoura; Alemany vs. Riverside Poly; Chaminade vs. Foothill.

—Division 2 (May 20, Wild Card): Damien defeated St. Joseph/Santa Maria, 3-2, and will play Crescenta Valley May 22.

—Division 3 (May 21, Wild Card): West Covina beat St. Paul 6-1.

—Division 3 (May 23, first round): Serra vs. Loara; Bishop Amat vs. Elsinore; La Salle vs. Redondo Union.

—Division 5 (May 21, Wild Card): St. Bernard beat Azusa 4-0.

—Division 5 (May 23, first round): Mary Star vs. Whittier Christian; Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary vs. Jurupa Hills; Paraclete vs. Maranatha. St. Bernard vs. Arroyo.

—Division 6 (May 22, first round): Santa Clara vs. Bloomington Christian; Providence vs. Hesperia Christian.

—Division 7 (May 23, first round): St. Monica Academy vs. Desert Chapel.

Softball

In softball, Catholic schools moved into second round play in Division 3, 5 and 6, with Divisions 3 and 6 guaranteed to produce at least one Catholic school quarterfinalist apiece. This week’s wild card and first round results include the following:

—Division 1 (May 20, first round):  Etiwanda defeated Rosary 5-2; Riverside Poly beat Mater Dei 3-2. Murietta Valley beat Santa Margarita 8-2 in wild card play.

—Division 3 (May 19, Wild Card):  La Salle beat Quartz Hill 5-3; Bishop Amat defeated Lancaster; Arcadia beat St. Joseph/Lakewood 7-1.

—Division 3 (May 20, first round): Warren beat Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks 2-0; Alemany beat Carter 18-6; St. Paul beat Mira Costa 7-1; Chaminade beat Sunny Hills 5-3; Burbank beat La Salle 1-0; Bishop Amat beat Burbank Burroughs 6-3.

—Division 3 (May 22, second round): Alemany vs. St. Paul; Chaminade vs. North Torrance; Bishop Amat vs. La Serna.

—Division 5 (May 20, first round): Paraclete beat Edgewood 4-3 (after Edgewood beat Immaculate Heart 7-3 in a May 19 Wild Card game); Riverside Burroughs beat Notre Dame Academy 12-0. Paraclete plays Anaheim May 23 in second round play.

—Division 6 (May 20, first round): Bellarmine-Jefferson beat Liberty Christian 21-2; Alverno beat Cal Lutheran 13-3; St. Monica beat Rio Hondo Prep 7-3; Shadow Hills beat St. Anthony 12-2; Vasquez beat Bishop Conaty-Loretto 12-8; Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary beat Webb 11-0; St. Bonaventure beat Upland Christian 22-0; Mary Star of the Sea beat San Gabriel Mission 10-0; Grace Brethren beat St. Pius-St. Matthias Academy 15-11; Pomona Catholic beat Desert Christian 21-0.
