A 70-year-old Catholic nun left in critical condition following a hit-and-run collision has died from her injuries. Sister Raquel Diaz, EIN, passed away Dec. 20.

On Dec. 13, Sister Raquel was at a crosswalk at Winter St. and North Evergreen Ave. in Boyle Heights when a small, white four-door compact car struck her. The driver of the vehicle continued traveling southbound, never stopping, Los Angeles officials report.

Sister Raquel, who had been a member of the religious order Esclavas de la Inmaculada Niña for more than 50 years, was taken to the hospital after being treated at the scene by paramedics. The accident occurred near the Church of Assumption, where she had served as director of religious education.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the hit-and-run driver. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.

A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered to anyone with information leading to the offender’s identification, apprehension and conviction. The reward money comes from the Hit and Run Reward Program Trust Fund, instituted earlier this year by the Los Angeles City Council.

Those with information are asked to call the Central Traffic Division Detectives at (213) 833-3713. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477. Tipsters may also visit LAPDOnline.org to report information.
