The local Salvadoran Catholic community is inviting the faithful from across the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to celebrate the life and legacy of Blessed Archbishop Oscar Romero on Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown Los Angeles.

Archbishop José H. Gomez will celebrate the Spanish Mass at 12:30 p.m., which will commemorate the 100th birthday anniversary of Blessed Romero, who was shot and killed while leading Mass in his native El Salvador in 1980.

Born on Aug. 15, 1917, Blessed Romero was ordained a priest at the age of 25 in 1942. In the late 1970s he became a voice for the voiceless, as thousands were being killed or were disappearing monthly across the civil war-torn nation. He has since become a beloved martyr and was beatified on May 23, 2015.

The cathedral is located at 555 W. Temple St., at the corner of Hill and Temple streets in Downtown L.A. To contact the cathedral, call 213-680-5200.
