Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles is recovering at home after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles confirmed that the archbishop, who is fully vaccinated and boosted, began experiencing “mild symptoms” after a recent trip, and is isolating at home.

“I am grateful to be experiencing mild symptoms and look forward to returning to my in-person ministry soon,” Archbishop Gomez said. “I continue to offer my prayers for all those suffering from this virus. Let us all continue to pray for those who may be seriously ill that they may find healing in the grace of our Lord through the intercession of our Blessed Mother.”

The news comes as LA County and several other counties in the surrounding area have moved to the “medium” risk category, due to rising case numbers and hospitalizations in the last week.

Archbishop Gomez had planned to celebrate a Memorial Day Mass at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery and Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary on Monday. The archdiocese confirmed that the Mass will still be held with another celebrant.
