As it approaches its first anniversary, Angelus, the official magazine of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, won 20 awards at the Catholic Press Association’s 2017 Catholic Media Conference. Spanish-language Archdiocesan monthly newspaper Vida Nueva received 14 awards. Both publications were recognized for high quality reporting, analysis, photojournalism, design and covers on topics such as immigration, sex trafficking, prison reform, and health among other issues affecting society.

The Tidings newspaper, replaced by Angelus magazine on July 1, 2016, took two awards, and the Catholic Directory received one. Angelus was also awarded for having some of the best columnists in the Church, including Archbishop José H. Gomez for his weekly column “New World of Faith.”

The competition included Catholic publications from across the U.S. and Canada, and recognized work done in 2016.

During the conference, held on June 20-23 at Quebec, Canada, four journalists were selected by the Catholic Relief Services as the 2017 Egan Journalism Fellows for its demonstrated motivation to report on issues that affect the poor and marginalized around the world, including John David (J.D.) Long-Garcia, the Archdiocese’s publications’ editor-in-chief. In accordance with CRS’ mission to assist the poor and vulnerable in the world, the fellowship will examine the policy issues that affect people in need across the world during a two-day reporting trip to Washington, D.C. this fall.

“This is quite a surprise. We continue to be inspired by and learn from our colleagues in the Catholic press,” said Long-Garcia. “The recognition is a testament to the hard work carried out not only by our staff, but by the entire communications team in Los Angeles. Archbishop José H. Gomez and David Scott, vice chancellor of Communications, deserve so much credit for supporting our efforts to engage our readership with solid Catholic journalism. As our Vicar General, Msgr. Albert Bahhuth, recently told me, ‘we do this for the glory of God and to save souls in the name of Jesus.’”

Long-Garcia won two first place awards for Best Coverage of Immigration with the stories “Residents: Quagmire awaits immigrants after Supreme Court decision,” “Stuck: Thousands of Haitians await their fate on the U.S.-Mexico border” and “Future unknown: Uncertainty surrounds immigration reform.” He also received first place for Best Cover with “What now America?.”

Angelus reporters Robert W. Dellinger and Alicia Morandi received the first place award for Best In-Depth/Analysis Writing, for the story “Inside the life: A closer look at sex trafficking in Los Angeles.” Dellinger was the recipient of the third place award as Writer of the Year, English Language Division.

Victor Aleman, Angelus’ photographer and Vida Nueva’s editor and photographer, took first place for Angelus’ Best Multiple Picture Package, for the story “Stuck, Thousands of Haitians await their fate on the U.S.-Mexico border.” Aleman won third place as the Photographer of the Year.

Angelus’ first place recipients include columnists Heather King (The Crux) and Grazie Pozo Christie (With Grace), and Kevin and Laura Loker, for the Best Electronic Newsletter, “Always Forward.”

In total, Angelus was awarded seven first place, five second place, four third place and four honorable mention accolades. Vida Nueva won eight first place, one second place and two third place awards, and received three honorable mentions. The Catholic Directory of the Archdiocese won a third place award.
