Led by sprinter Blake Hennesay, Santa Margarita finished second in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 boys’ track and field finals May 19 at El Camino College.

Santa Margarita totalled 62 points behind winner Harvard/Westlake’s 77. Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks followed with 59.5, and St. John Bosco was fourth with 29.

Elsewhere, Loyola was tenth in Division 1, Mater Dei third in Division 2 and Paraclete fourth in Division 4 at the annual event which precedes the Master’s Meet May 25-26 and the State Championships June 1-2. A division-by-division breakdown follows.

Division 1: Loyola is top-10

Largely on the heels of junior Mason Ratkovich, Loyola — the only local Catholic school to compete in D-1 — was tenth with 20.5 points (Great Oak of Temecula won with 73).

Ratkovich finished just .14 seconds behind winner Ryan Bush of Tesoro in the 800 meters, then joined seniors Alex Johnson, Corey Kumamoto and Michael Hutton to finish seventh in the 4x400 meter relay. Pole vaulter Will O’Brien was third; shot putter Ceasar Melendez, sixth; and 1600 meter runner Anthony Stone, seventh. 

Division 2: Monarch juniors shine

Junior Titan Ruotolo won the triple jump and was fifth in long jump, while junior teammate Chad Lemmons was fourth in the 100 and 200, and ran on the third place 4x100 and fourth place 4x400 relay teams, helping Mater Dei accumulate 49 points and third place behind Murrieta Mesa’s 74.

The Monarchs also scored big when senior Sam VanDorpe, who anchored the 4x400 team, won the 800 meters, with junior teammate John Wacker fourth. Junior Corbin Utley ran on both relay teams; other relay team members were sophomore Bryson Washington and freshman David Nisson (4x100) and Wacker (4x400).

Division 3: 6 wins, 8 seconds

Six events were won by Catholic schools, with Santa Margarita’s Hennesay (100 meters and 300 meter hurdles) and St. Francis junior Matthew Molina (100 hurdles and high jump) each winning twice. St. John Bosco junior Colby Bowman won the 200 and ran on the winning 4x100 Meter Relay team with senior Level Price, junior Titus Toler and sophomore Nathan Jones.

Hennesay also ran on both of Santa Margarita’s fourth-place relay teams, the 4x100 with Christopher Allen and Justin and Richie Caragao, and the 4x400 with Derek Brajevich, Michael Ventura and Justin Caragao. Eagles’ distance runner Sean Byrne was second in the 1600 and 3200-meter races; high jumper Brendan Cormie was second; 1600-meter runner Ian Howard was fourth; and pole vaulter Trevor Williamson was sixth.

Notre Dame was led by junior sprinter Christian Grubb who was fourth in the 100, sixth in the 200, third in triple jump and led off the third-place 4x100 relay team that included sophomores Sean Guyton and Andre Bray, and junior Adam Horvath. John Macias was seventh in the 800.

Three Knights scored points in the strength events. Seniors Quinten Lyons, Jordan Palmer and Steven Barnett finished 2-3-5 in shot put, and Palmer, Lyons and Barnett were 2-3-7 in discus. High jumper Ahmir McGee tied for fifth.

In addition to its sprint wins, St. John Bosco earned points from Titus Toler (fourth in long jump), James Smith (seventh in triple jump), Diego de la Torre (eighth in the 3200) and Sal Spina (eighth in shot put). St. Francis pole vaulter Blake Howard was fifth and long jumper Andrew Monarrez was eighth.            

Among Catholic schools, Servite and St. Francis each scored 25 points, J.Serra 23, Bishop Amat 9; Damien and Alemany 8 each, and Cathedral 1. Standout performances included:

Division 4: Hunts pace Paraclete

Paraclete senior football stars Andre and Antonio Hunt joined senior Jaylin Tynes and junior Lorenzo Hurtado in winning the 4x100 relay, helping the Spirits to a fourth-place overall finish behind winner Oaks Christian. 

Antonio placed second in the 200 and Andre fifth in the 100, and the twin brothers joined seniors Reno Wilson and Nicholas Orozco to finish seventh in the 4x400 relay. Also scoring points were junior Sacaiah Shaw (third in the 110 hurdles) and sophomore Rennie Alan (sixth in shot put).

St. Joseph/Santa Maria tallied 13 points, Serra 12, Bishop Montgomery 10, Bishop Diego 8, St. Paul 5, St. Bonaventure 2 and Bell-Jeff 1. Other standout performances:
