Bishop Amat took home first place for the boys and second place for the girls in the CIF State Division IV championships Nov. 29.
After sweeping the CIF-SS titles at Mt. SAC last week, they looked to do the same in Fresno’s Woodward Park on Saturday. Woodward Park is a five-kilometer course.
The boys won by 28 points, with the closest team being King City. This is Bishop Amat’s first state championship. The girls led until the final mile, but faltered at the end, claiming second place, losing by 25 points.
For the boys, the top runner was Robbie Santoyo, who finished seventh overall with a time of 15:47. Fernando Gonzales came in close behind, finishing 12th with a time of 15:57. Adrian Diaz finished 23rd, clocking in at 16:09. Josh Moreno finished with a time of 16:19, good enough for 31st overall.
The girls were led by sophomore Ally Palomino, who finished seventh in 18:36. Emily Hubert finished three spots behind Palomino, coming in 10th with a time of 18:42. Samantha Cabrera, fighting a pre-race illness, came in 22nd with a time of 19:39.

In Division 1, Loyola High School senior Robert Brandt came in second place, with a time of 15:07. With that time, Brandt qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals on Dec. 6 in Portland, Oregon. However, their team effort was only good enough for seventh place overall.
