St. John Bosco’s Braves concluded the 2018 regular season much as they began it, by dominating their opposition last Friday on their way to the CIF-Southern Section football playoffs that begin this week.
Their 56-0 romp over Servite gave the Braves a 10-0 overall record, a Trinity League championship (at 5-0), another No. 1 national ranking from Maxpreps, and a top seed in the Division 1 bracket (see separate story). But to win their first CIF-SS title since 2016, St. John Bosco has plenty of tough games ahead, including a potential finals bout with Mater Dei.
In addition to St. John Bosco, last weekend’s final regular season action saw the following champions crowned in leagues comprised completely or primarily of Catholic schools: Bishop Amat (Mission), Cathedral (Angelus), St. Paul (Del Rey), Bishop Montgomery (Camino Real), and St. Bernard (Santa Fe).
Bishop Amat had to rally in the fourth quarter to beat Alemany for the Mission League title, while Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks rolled over Chaminade to secure the league’s runner-up position. And St. Bernard bowled over St. Pius X-St. Matthias for the Santa Fe League title, after both teams entered the game unbeaten in league play.
