Nearly 400 people attended the 2014 CYO Sports Awards Banquet, held June 1 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

The gala affair in the Grand Ballroom features presentations to 170 student athletes who were invited as guests of CYO to be recognized as All-CYO for their athletic achievements during the school year.

Among the annual awards presented were the Directors Cup awards for athletic success by school, determined by points earned based on achievement in CYO playoffs and competition events. The overall winner was American Martyrs, Manhattan Beach, earning the title for seventh consecutive year. Regional honors were earned by Holy Family, South Pasadena (North); St. Benedict, Montebello (East); and Beatitudes of Our Lord, La Mirada (South).

Individual awards went to Stefanie Berberabe of St. Linus in Norwalk (Female Athlete); Sal Spina, Holy Family, South Pasadena (Male Athlete); and Raymond Moreno of St. Turibius, Los Angeles (Coach).

As previously noted in The Tidings (June 13), long time St. Rita (Sierra Madre) athletic director Randy Davies was presented with the inaugural CYO Athletic Director of the Year Award, which going forward will be known as the Randy Davies Athletic Director of the Year Award.

“Coach Davies fully embodies and projects the spirit of CYO and the ‘Play Like A Champion’ philosophy, said James McGoldrick, CYO director. “It was an easy decision to recognize Randy for this first time honor.”

Silent auction items were donated by several area Catholic high schools, including St. John Bosco, Cathedral, Don Bosco Tech, St. Francis, La Salle, Salesian, Damien, Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks), Providence, St. Paul, Bishop Amat, Cantwell Sacred Heart and St. Mary's Academy.
