Statement on PopernFrancis’ Appointment of New Auxiliary Bishop to Serve the Archdiocese of LosrnAngeles
Most Reverend José H.rnGomez, Archbishop of LosrnAngeles
Cathedral of Our Ladyrnof the Angels
April 5, 2018
Greetings, my friends, and welcome!
This is a great day of joy for the family of God here in thernArchdiocese of Los Angeles.
In this beautiful Easter season, our Holy Father PopernFrancis has blessed us today by appointing a new Auxiliary Bishop to serve ourrnpeople.
I am honored to introduce you this morning to Bishop-electrnMarc Trudeau.
As you will discover, our new auxiliary bishop has a greatrnpersonal story.
I would just like to share with you my own privilege of knowingrnhim and working with him for these past eight years.
Our Bishop-elect is a very fine priest. He is a man ofrnprayer and he is a man of service.
I know he is going to be, as Pope Francis likes to say, “arnshepherd who knows the smell of his sheep.”
As a priest, our Bishop-elect has always had a heart for hisrnpeople. He is close to them in their joys and sorrows and in the challengesrnthey face in their everyday lives.
So, I know that he is going to be a great bishop.
Just one thing I want to point out. Being a bishop in thernCatholic Church is not like any ordinary “job.” That is why this is such arnspecial day of joy for us.
We believe that Jesus Christ himself chooses every bishop torncarry on the mission that he entrusted to his Apostles and his Church.
For us, every bishop is a living sign of Jesus — whornloves us, who is alive with us, and who is walking with us on the journey of ourrnlives.
The bishop has the responsibility of helping us to know Jesusrnand to know his love and his plan for our lives. The bishop is called to prayrnfor God’s people, to teach them, and to lead them — always by the example ofrnhis own love and self-sacrifice.
So, this is the beautiful mission that Pope Francis hasrnentrusted to Bishop-elect Trudeau! And this is the beautiful gift that God isrngiving all of us today — in giving us a new bishop for the family of God here inrnLos Angeles.
I will be privileged to ordain our Bishop-elect here at thernCathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on June 7 at 2 p.m. And I hope you will allrnbe able to join us!
So again, I personally want to express my thanks today to ourrnHoly Father Pope Francis and to his Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop ChristophernPierre.
It is a wonderful day for all of us, and especially forrnBishop-elect Trudeau and his family. I thank you all for being with us to sharernin our joy and gratitude.
May God bless you and your families!
