The selection of Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton to the July 15 Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Minneapolis represents the latest local Catholic high school product to be chosen for the mid-summer classic.

Stanton entered this week leading the National league in homeruns (21), runs batted in (62), total bases (189) and intentional walks (15), with a .308 batting average. The Panorama City native and graduate of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks — a major leaguer since 2010, when he was 20 — previously was named to the 2012 All-Star Game, but could not play because of a knee injury.

In his young career, Stanton has consistently hit some of the longest homeruns in the majors, and as of July 6 had hit 138 homers in his career, with a season-best 37 in 2012 when he led the NL in slugging percentage at .602. He was drafted by Florida in the second round of the 2007 amateur draft.

Here is how some other Los Angeles Archdiocese Catholic school products are currently faring in their current or very recent major league endeavors with totals as of July 6:

Dan Haren (Bishop Amat, La Puente): The 33-year-old Monterey Park native is 8-5 with a 4.06 earned average in his first season for the Los Angeles Dodgers. A three-time All-Star (2007-09), Haren’s career mark is 137-116, with a 3.76 ERA for St. Louis, Oakland, Arizona, the Angels, Washington and the Dodgers. The Pepperdine University product was drafted by St. Louis in the second round of the 2001 draft.

Evan Longoria (St. John Bosco, Bellflower): Another former three-time All-Star (2008-10), the 28-year-old Downey native — a first round draft pick by Tampa Bay (and third overall) in 2008 — is batting 265, with 11 homeruns and 40 RBIs. In his career, Longoria has hit .274, with 173 HR, 584 RBI and a career-best 33 HR and 113 RBI in 2009. He also was named the 2008 AL Rookie of the Year, the 2009-10 AL Gold Glove winner at third base, the 2009 AL Silver Slugger third baseman, and six times has been AL Player of the Week.

Trevor Plouffe (Crespi, Encino): Born in West Hills, the 2004 first-round pick (20th overall) by Minnesota came up to the majors in 2010, and has career totals of 54 homeruns and 186 RBI. In 2014, he is batting .245, with 6 HR, 42 RBIs and 25 doubles, playing mainly third base.

Brendan Ryan (Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks): Chosen in the seventh round by St. Louis in 2003, Ryan currently is batting .279 for the New York Yankees, who he joined last year, after stints with the Cardinals and Seattle Mariners. A Los Angeles native who played at Lewis-Clark State College in Boise, he is one of the game’s best-fielding shortstops.

Brett Hayes (Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks): Drafted by Florida in 2005’s second round, the Pasadena native (who also attended the University of Nevada/Reno) spent four years with the Marlins (2009-12) as a reserve catcher, and now fulfills that role with the Kansas City Royals, with whom he has played since 2013. In 170 major league games, he has hit 10 homeruns.

Christian Bergman (St. Francis, La Canada): The Glendale native was a 24th round pick by Colorado in 2010 out of UC Irvine, and made his major league debut on June 9 for Rockies, allowing two earned runs in six innings to Atlanta while suffering a tough loss. After another good start at San Francisco, Bergman suffered broken hand and is currently on the 60-day disabled list.

Kevin Pillar (Chaminade, West Hills): The 25-year-old West Hills native has been up briefly with Toronto in 2013 and again this year, playing in 62 games and delivering a walk-off hit earlier in the season for the surprising Blue Jays. Pillar was drafted by Toronto in round 32 in 2011 out of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Dan Runzler (Chaminade, West Hills): Born in Santa Monica, the left-handed relief specialist spent parts of 2009-12 with the Giants, compiling a 3.86 ERA and 4-2 record in 89 games (all but one in relief), and 78 strikeouts in 72 innings. Drafted by San Francisco in 2007’s ninth round from UC Riverside, he is currently at Fresno (of the Pacific Coast League) with a 3.13 ERA.

Chris Dickerson (Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks): The 32-year-old outfielder has spent part or all of six seasons with Cincinnati, Milwaukee, the Yankees and Baltimore, and this week was sent from Pittsburgh to Cleveland. Dickerson was taken in the 16th round by Cincinnati in 2003 out of the University of Nevada/Reno.

Doug Bernier (St. Joseph, Santa Maria): Signed by Colorado as free agent in 2002, the Oral Roberts University infielder-outfielder last year played 33 games with Minnesota after playing two games for the Rockies in 2008. He currently is batting .289 with the Twins’ Rochester (International League) affiliate.
