A tabernacle containing the Blessed Sacrament has been stolen from Santo Tomás Church in Los Angeles. Staff members discovered the burglary in the early morning of July 16. Other religious items were also missing, according to police reports.
Stealing or desecrating the eucharist is a form of sacrilege, as the host is the body of Christ. The tabernacle is always kept locked but the burglars were able to remove the entire tabernacle, which had been attached to the altar. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) are working together to recover the items.
