Dominant wins (again) by Mater Dei and St. John Bosco were among the highlights of last weekend’s high school football action involving local Catholic teams.

Mater Dei’s 63-7 win over Villa Park brought the Monarchs to 2-0 going into their game this Friday night in Arizona against Centennial of Peoria, while DJ Uiagalelei’s five touchdown passes led the Braves (2-0) in a 56-21 romp over Don Bosco Prep of Ramsey, New Jersey. St. John Bosco travels to Las Vegas Sept. 6 for a contest with Liberty of Henderson, Nevada.

Serra of Gardena, tenth in last week’s combined CIF-Southern Section Divisions 1 & 2 poll, rolled over Garfield of East L.A., 41-14, but No. 4 J.Serra was beaten by St. Joseph Regional of Montvale, N.J., 24-13. Cathedral, eighth in D-3, was beaten by Cajon, 26-14.

Loyola, seventh in D-4, downed St. Bernard, ninth in D-13, 38-0. St. Paul, sixth in D-5, toppled Banning 40-7; St. Bonaventure, eighth in D-5, lost 13-3 to Bishop Diego; and Mary Star of the Sea, seventh in D-14, blanked Whittier Christian 45-0.

Among the down-to-the-wire games, Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) edged Desert Vista 37-35; Bishop Amat slipped by Paramount 28-27 in overtime; and St. Francis nipped Mira Costa 23-21. Last week’s other results:
