Softball: D-5 and D-7 teams lead Catholic advance to Round 2

Thirteen Catholic school teams (including four each in Divisions 5 and 7) have advanced to the second round of the CIF-SS Softball Tournament after first round victories on May 17. Two of the first-round games were all-Catholic affairs. 

In Division 5, St. Joseph/Santa Maria defeated Alverno Heights 9-1, and in Division 6, Mayfield blanked St. Genevieve 10-0.Second round games are May 22, followed by quarterfinals May 24, semifinals May 29, and finals June 1 and 2 at Deanna Manning Stadium, Irvine. The first round results:

Division 1: Santa Margarita d. Yorba Linda 3-0. Second round: Santa Margarita vs. No. 1-ranked Norco; Mater Dei (which had a first round bye) vs. Mission Viejo.

Division 2: Newbury Park d. Bishop Amat 5-0; La Serna d. St. Joseph/Lakewood 10-0.

Division 3: Alemany d. Golden Valley 2-1; No. 1-ranked West Torrance d. St. Anthony (the 2017 D-6 champion) 10-6; Atascadero d. St. Bonaventure 8-0; St. Paul d. Tesoro 3-1. Second round: Alemany vs. Patriot; St. Paul vs. Palm Desert.

Division 4: Chaffey d. Paraclete 9-1; Godinez d. Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks 4-0.

Division 5: No. 1-ranked La Reina d. Hillcrest 4-2; Chaminade d. Wilson/Hacienda Heights 5-3; St. Joseph/Santa Maria d. Alverno Heights 9-1; Pomona Catholic d. Ontario Christian 9-1. Second round: La Reina vs. El Segundo; Chaminade vs. Aquinas; St. Joseph/Santa Maria vs. Santa Paula; Pomona Catholic vs. Templeton.

Division 6: Crean Lutheran d. Connelly 11-0; Mary Star d. Carpinteria 5-0; Mayfield d. St. Genevieve 10-0. Second round: Mary Star vs. Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana; Mayfield vs. Moreno Valley.

Division 7: Marymount d. Lone Pine 13-3; San Gabriel Mission d. Bethel Christian/Riverside 14-1; Serra d. Excelsior Charter 14-3; St. Mary’s Academy d. Trinity Classical Academy 30-11. Second round: Marymount vs. Westminster; San Gabriel Mission vs. Flintridge Prep; Serra vs. Mesa Grande Academy; St. Mary’s Academy vs. Costa Mesa.

In wild card games played May 15, Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks defeated Pacifica/Oxnard 10-5 in Division 4; St. Joseph/Santa Maria defeated Lompoc 1-0, and Pomona Catholic defeated San Jacinto 2-1 in D-5; and Notre Dame Academy lost to Nipomo 43-11 (5 innings, no outfield fence), and Ramona Convent lost to Poly/Pasadena 10-1 in D-6.
