To kick-off Catholic Schools Week activities and events throughout the Archdiocese, Archbishop José H. Gomez will celebrate the annual Family Mass at St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy, a co-ed Catholic high school in Downey on Monday, Jan. 28, at 9:45 a.m. School choirs from Catholic elementary schools around the area, and families of diverse backgrounds and faiths will also join this celebration.

Archbishop Gomez will celebrate Mass and bless a new altar made by a parent for school liturgies. Prior to the Mass a student will share a reflection on the impact Catholic education has made in her life. Students and alumni will participate in readings, prayers of the faithful and the offertory.

A special recognition will be presented to the Dan Murphy Foundation, which has been a generous benefactor to Catholic high schools throughout the Archdiocese.

As part of the National Catholic Schools Week, observed in all dioceses in the United States from January 27 - February 2, schools throughout the tri-county Archdiocese (Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara), serving nearly 80,000 students, will host open houses highlighting unique programs and offerings, special events and Masses.
