Bishop Montgomery reached the Division 4 finals of the CIF-Southern Section girls’ tennis tournament by defeating No. 1 seeded Temescal Canyon 12-6 in the Nov. 7 semifinals.
The Knights (18-0), fourth-seeded entering the playoffs, will try to cap their undefeated season against unseeded El Toro (12-8) in the Nov. 9 finals. It would be the first girls’ tennis title for Bishop Montgomery since 1977, when the four Fernandez sisters, coached by their mother, led the Knights to the CIF-SS 4-A title.
No local Catholic school has won a CIF-SS girls’ team tennis title since St. Bonaventure in 2002 (Division IV).
Boys’ water polo
Servite and Cathedral will play for CIF-SS championships in boys’ water polo Nov. 9 after winning their semifinal matches Nov. 7.
Third-seeded Servite (21-9) won its Division 3 semifinal battle with Segerstrom, 16-12, for the right to play top-seeded Los Osos (19-13) in the finals at William Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine. The Friars are seeking their fifth CIF-SS water polo title and their first since 2005 (Division II).
And seventh-seeded Cathedral (15-9) will play second-seeded Baldwin Park (20-6) in the Division 7 finals after beating fifth-seeded Cabrillo Beach 13-8 in the semifinals, and top-seeded Paloma Valley 9-7 in the quarterfinals. The Phantoms are making their first finals appearance in water polo.
In Division 1, Loyola (21-7) was edged by Harvard-Westlake, 7-6, in the semifinals.
