A pair of first-half goals were enough for the Loyola Marymount University men's soccer team to earn its first win of the season by beating Oral Roberts 2-0 Sept. 6 at Sullivan Field.
The Lions’ international roster played a key role in the win. Junior Bastien Oberli from Switzerland sent a free kick into the net in the 31st minute, and sophomore CJ Neville from Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas scored in the 44th minute on assists from Gaetan Roux from France and Duhoney Williams from Jamaica.
LMU controlled the match throughout, outshooting the Golden Eagles 20-5 (and 9-1 in shots on goal) in a contest that also featured 24 fouls and three ejections.
On Sept. 8, the Lions ran their record to 2-1 with a 1-0 win over Loyola of Chicago, as junior Francis Avoce from Sacramento scored in the 79th minute, and sophomore Jacob Jackson from Escondido turned away all three Rambler shots on goal.
The Lions continue their homestand this weekend at Sullivan Field with matches against Sacramento State Sept. 13 (7 p.m.) and UC Davis Sept. 15 (1 p.m.).
Women tie Drexel
Madison Werner’s first career goal helped the LMU women’s team earn its second tie of the season, a 1-1 draw with Drexel on Sept. 6 at Sullivan Field.
A freshman from Capistrano Valley High School, Werner slipped behind the Drexel defense, took a pass from Simone Handy and fired the ball into the corner of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute.
But Drexel (2-0-1) came right back to score in the 65th minute, and neither team could penetrate the other’s defense in regulation or in overtime. The Lions outshot the Philadelphia-based Dragons 14-6 in the late afternoon match.
LMU (0-3-2) this weekend plays a pair of matches in Pullman, Wash., against Texas Tech on Sept. 13 and Washington State on Sept. 15.
