With league play just two weeks away for many Catholic school football teams, several are concluding their “non-league tune-up” seasons on a very high note.

St. John Bosco, the No. 2 team in Divisions 1&2 of the CIF-Southern Section poll and in Maxpreps’ national survey, posted an easy 42-10 trouncing of Mililani (Hawaii) on the losers’ field Saturday night. Mater Dei, the team the Braves trail in both polls (and their chief Trinity League rival), was idle.

Servite and J.Serra (sixth in D-1&2), two other Trinity League forces, each won their Friday games, as did Mission League rivals Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (No. 9 in D-1&2) and Alemany (third in D-3).

Other winners among the ranked Catholic teams last weekend were Loyola (seventh in D-4), La Salle (tenth in D-9), Crespi (eighth in D-6), St. Monica (fourth in D-14) and St. Pius X-St. Matthias (ninth in D-14).

On the down side, losers among the ranked included Serra of Gardena (fifth in D-1&2), Cathedral (ninth in D-3), St. Paul (sixth in D-5), Bishop Diego (ninth in D-5), and Mary Star of the Sea (fifth in D-14).

Looking Ahead

This coming week is a respite week for several of the Southland’s top teams as they gear up for league play in October. Mater Dei (4-0), however, returns to action Sept. 27, traveling to Washington, D.C., to play St. John’s at Georgetown.

St. John Bosco (5-0) is idle and begins Trinity League play Oct. 4 at Servite (3-1), which takes on unbeaten Notre Dame (4-0) in Sherman Oaks on Sept. 27. Santa Margarita (3-2) and J.Serra (4-1), both bouncing back after slow starts, are idle until their Trinity League opener Oct. 4 against one another in San Juan Capistrano.

Alemany (5-0) is idle next week, then plays at Bishop Amat (4-1) in the Oct. 4 Mission League opener for both schools. Serra (3-1) plays at Cathedral (3-2) on Sept. 27, the same day Crespi (4-1) takes on St. Bonaventure (3-2) in Ventura).
