Three of four Catholic schools competing in the CIF State championship tournament advanced to the quarterfinals with first round victories Nov. 12.

Bishop Montgomery, St. Bonaventure, and St. Bernard won their opening matches in the Southern California Regional portion of the tournament, while Sacred Heart suffered a narrow loss. The results:

Division II: No. 9 Bishop Montgomery beat No. 8 Redwood 25-8, 25-18, 28-26, and will play No. 1 Murrieta Valley in the quarterfinals Nov. 14.

Division IV: No. 2 St. Bonaventure beat No. 15 Chatsworth 25-12, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15, and will play No. 7 Desert Christian Academy. No. 11 Sacred Heart lost to No. 6 El Camino Real 24-26, 28-26, 26-24, 25-21.

Division V: No. 8 St. Bernard beat No. 9 Cornerstone Christian three sets to one, and will play No. 1 Mammoth.

In the Open Division, Mater Dei seeded third behind Torrey Pines and Redondo Union drew a first round bye. Marymount, seeded fourth, plays No. 5 Cathedral Catholic of San Diego on Nov. 13, with the winner to meet Torrey Pines in the regional semifinals. 

All regional semis are Nov. 16, and regional finals are Nov. 19, followed by state finals on a date to be determined.
