Five of 11 Catholic school teams that played in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section boys’ volleyball playoffs May 10 have reached the May 12 quarterfinals.

The matchups will include one all-Catholic encounter: La Salle (23-6) versus Providence of Burbank (19-5), after each prevailed in their second round matches. Mission League rivals Loyola and Alemany, with only four losses between them (two of them administered by Loyola to Alemany) reached the Division 1 quarterfinals, and Damien did likewise in Division 3. 

A breakdown of second-round results and quarterfinal matchups:

Division 1: Loyola upended Burroughs/Burbank and Alemany stopped Santa Barbara, both in straight sets (3-0). But Servite fell 3-0 to unbeaten Newport Harbor, the country’s and California’s top-ranked team by Maxpreps; Santa Margarita lost 3-0 to South Torrance; and Mater Dei lost 3-1 to Tesoro.

In the quarterfinals, Loyola (23-2, ranked No. 3 in California) plays Tesoro (23-5, 15th statewide), and Alemany (23-2, 13th in California) opposes Newport Harbor (30-0).

Division 2: Bishop Montgomery lost 3-1 to San Juan Hills, and St. Francis fell 3-0 to Quartz Hill.

Division 3: Damien (28-8) ousted Paloma Valley 3-0, and will play Tustin (26-2) in the quarterfinals. 

Division 4: La Salle (22-6) defeated Laguna Blanca 3-0, and Providence/Burbank (14-2) beat Santa Ana Valley 3-0, to set up a quarterfinal match in Pasadena. But St. Anthony was upset by Murrieta Valley 3-1, the latter winning two of its three sets by 26-24.

Quarterfinals will be followed by semifinals May 16 and finals May 19, and then the SoCal Regionals May 22 through 26.
