Carlos Royal, an associate professor of Sociology at Marymount California University in Rancho Palos Verdes, was recently named the school’s Educator of the Year for 2013-2014 by fellow staff and faculty for his “stellar level of commitment and involvement to the Marymount Community.”
Among his varied teaching accomplishments, Royal was recognized for his dedication to his students, both in and outside of the classroom. He devoted personal time during spring break to lead a group of students, staff and community members on a trip to Cuba for service and cultural exchange, an experience that some of the participating students described as “life-changing.”
In addition, Royal actively supports students in Delta Epsilon Sigma, the national scholastic honor society he advises, and he regularly hosts “Wing Nights” with students, allowing them to develop familial relationships with faculty and with one another.
According to fellow Marymount staff and faculty, Professor Royal is also a “master of social media and technology … is thorough and organized … is detail-oriented and motivated by excellence … [and] is a joy to partner with in all academic projects.”
