St. Anastasia School embraces season of giving
At St. Anastasia School in Westchester, the concept of helping others is an important part of the curriculum. Every year the students, their families and parishioners extend their hands to help those less fortunate. This year the parochial school has been participating in multiple charitable activities aimed at helping those less fortunate during the Christmas season.
Students each voluntarily fill a gift box intended for a boy or girl their same age, which will be distributed at Ascension and Sacred Heart parishes. Additionally, the annual Adopt-a-Family program is completing another successful run. Each classroom "adopts" a family through St. Margaret Center, which aids underprivileged families in Lennox. The amount of gifts, clothing and food collected is astounding; and the students have fun creating decorations for their family's Christmas tree and home.
Students then help to deliver the packages to their adopted family, essentially delivering Christmas — complete with a tree, decorations, gifts and dinner, including all the trimmings.

Holy Trinity, Kipp Academy are FIYA winners
On a beautiful day for football, FIYA (Foundation for Interscholastic Youth Athletics) held its Flag Football Championship Dec. 1 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The championship game saw familiar foes Holy Trinity of San Pedro and St. Anastasia of Westchester battle it out for FIYA supremacy. Trinity got out to a 14-0 lead but knew from experience the Panthers would not go quietly. And after scoring on the last play of the half, St. Anastasia followed it up with a scoring drive to begin the second and cut the lead to 14-12. The Chargers quickly answered with a score of their own though, and made several key defensive stops down the stretch to secure the 28-18 win and the championship.
In the third place game, KIPP Academy of Opportunity of Los Angeles took on Century Academy of Inglewood. The first half saw the teams trade scores, with KIPP holding a slim 12-8 lead at the intermission. It was more of the same in the second half with neither team able to gain control until KIPP got in the end zone one last time in the closing minutes to secure a 24-16 win.
