On Monday, May 14, Notre Dame High School (NDHS) hosted their 32nd annual scholarship golf tournament at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana.
The charity event, which raised a record high of more than $130,000, was dedicated to the memory of Notre Dame alumnus Joe Allegretti (class of 1956), who passed away in April after a brief battle with cancer.
“Joe Allegretti was the single most influential person in Notre Dame's history,” NDHS President Brett Lowart stated. “As the school's first Board President he saved the school from insolvency and instituted coeducation. As a benefactor, along with his wife Helen, his contributions are unparalleled. He was larger than life for our school and is dearly missed.”
Joe Allegretti played an enormous role in the history of Notre Dame High School. As the founding Chair of the Board of Directors, Joe oversaw the transition of Notre Dame from an all-male school to a coeducational institution in 1983. Joe personally financed the construction of the Allegretti Building, named for his parents Al and Mary.
He also created the Allegretti/Cassano Scholarship Fund, named in honor of his parents and Brother Eugenio, the school’s first band instructor, to provide financial assistance to students attending Notre Dame.
More than 160 attendees kicked off the day, starting with a putting contest in the morning, followed by an afternoon of golf. The evening featured a cocktail reception, dinner, silent auction and live auction before the awards ceremony.
The funds raised at the event will be used to support financial aid for those students who could not otherwise afford aHoly Cross education. More than 30 percent of Notre Dame students receive some form of financial assistance.
Since its inception, the tournament has raised more than $1.2 million for scholarships.
