On Oct. 30 at 8 p.m., the Dream Orchestra will perform Mozart’s “Requiem Mass in D Minor.” The concert will also include Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus.”
Mozart composed the requiem when Count Franz von Walsegg commissioned the work in order to commemorate the anniversary of his wife’s death. In 1791, Mozart’s death left the work unfinished. The work was later completed but many speculate about which artist undertook this task.
Daniel Suk will conduct the 45-piece orchestra, joined by the 38-member Opera Chorus of Los Angeles and four soloists: soprano Golda Berkman, mezzo soprano Lacey Jo Benter, tenor Hak Soo Kim and bass Patrick Blackwell.
The Dream Orchestra is committed to mentoring young artists of high school and college age, with the students playing alongside and learning from the professional musicians. On Oct. 30, the young artists will include Kenny Shelton, cello (Los Angeles County High School of the Arts-LACHSA); Steven Yen, cello (Cal State Northridge); Kyle James Shelton, contra bass (Mark Keppel High School) and many others.
The performance will take place at St. Monica Church, 725 California Ave., Santa Monica. Tickets are $40 ($30 for seniors and students).
