California is one of two states with more than one metropolitan archdiocese --- Los Angeles and San Francisco. (The other is Texas, with San Antonio and Galveston-Houston.

Notes: Bishops Ochoa (1970) and Ryan (1957) were ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and later served as Los Angeles auxiliary bishops. Bishop Ochoa served as Los Angeles auxiliary bishop (1987-96) before he was assigned to El Paso, Texas (1996-2011) and then to Fresno. Bishop Ryan served as Los Angeles auxiliary bishop (1990-92) before he was assigned to Monterey (1992-2007).

Notes: Archbishop Niederauer (1962) and Bishop Blaire (1967) were ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
