“Designer Babies: Whose Design,” a Eugenics and Ethics Conference, will be presented July 26 at The Center at Cathedral Plaza (next to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels), Los Angeles.
The National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia, Archbishop José Gomez and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are cosponsoring the conference, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Speakers include:
—John M. Haas, PhD, Director of the National Catholic Bioethics Center and Bioethics Advisor to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
—Father Tad Pacholczyk, PhD, Education Director for the National Catholic Bioethics Center.
—Dominican Father Nicanor Austriaco, Associate Professor of Biology and Instructor of Theology, Providence College.
—Dr. Vincent M. Fortanasce, MD, Clinical Professor of Neurology at USC.
—Charles S. LiMandri, attorney in religious liberty cases and member of the California Catholic Conference’s Religious Liberty committee.
A panel discussion on “The Future of the Eugenics Movement and Our Moral Responsibility as Catholics” will also be presented.
The conference will be followed in the evening by the Pope St. John Paul II Recognition Dinner (5:30-10 p.m., $250 per person) to be held in the Thousand Cranes Room of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles. All proceeds from the dinner benefit the NCBC programs for education and training in bioethics and to raise awareness regarding genetics, genetic testing and ethical policy concerns.
