The J.Serra and San Gabriel Mission girls’ soccer team and the Loyola boys’ squad will will for CIF Southern California Regional Soccer titles March 10, following semifinal victories March 8.

In a thrilling Division 1 overtime encounter, J.Serra defeated Santa Margarita 4-2 on penalty kicks, after the teams tied 1-1 in regulation (and after they had divided three earlier matches — a win for each and a tie — prior to Thursday’s match).

J.Serra (25-1-2) will play Baseline League champion Upland (21-3-1) at 4 p.m. March 10 in San Juan Capistrano for the Division 1 Regional title. On Dec. 28, J.Serra defeated Upland 2-1 on penalty kicks after the Lions and Highlanders played to a scoreless tie in regulation.

San Gabriel Mission, which hasn’t lost in two months, knocked off Orosi 3-1 in a Division 5 semifinal as sophomore Isabella Lopez scored twice and junior Havanna Garcia once.

In the 4 p.m. title game March 10, the Pioneers (30-1-2) will play third-seeded Fillmore (19-5-2), which won the CIF-SS Division 7 title. San Gabriel Mission won D-7 in 2017 before moving up to, and winning, D-6 in 2018.

In the boys’ Division 1 tournament, Loyola — on a goal by Sean Traylor with three minutes remaining — edged its Los Angeles neighbor Cathedral 2-1. Aidan Cuevas gave Loyolan early 1-0 lead, but Cathedral freshman Diego Barahona tied the game for Cathedral with nine minutes left, before Traylor converted the tie-breaking tally.

The win earned the Cubs (24-3-6) the right to play San Clemente (19-5-6) for the championship on March 10, 4 p.,m. in San Clemente. The Tritons, winners of the South Coast League, gained the final with a 3-1 upset of top-seeded Santa Barbara, which had beaten Loyola and Cathedral to win the CIF-SS D-1 championship.
