All three defending champions from 2016 — Santa Margarita, St. Joseph of Lakewood and St. Anthony — reached the second round of the CIF-Southern Section girls’ volleyball championships, after winning first-round matches Oct. 31.

In all, 16 of the 29 Catholic schools from Los Angeles and Orange which began the first round are still around for the second, which takes place Nov. 2. That includes four schools which each received first-round byes — Marymount and Mater Dei (Division 1), Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks (Division 2) and La Salle (Division 3).

A division-by-division breakdown of first-round results and second-round matches:

Division 1: Santa Margarita swept Arnold Beckman in straight sets; J.Serra lost a five-set match to Foothill/Santa Ana (15-8 in the final set) and Redondo Union beat Flintridge Sacred Heart. Round 2: Marymount (27-2) vs Vista Murrieta (17-7); Mater Dei (30-5) vs Mira Costa (15-8); Santa Margarita (28-8) vs Rancho Cucamonga (24-8).

Division 2: St. Joseph/Lakewood beat Millikan in straight sets, but Palos Verdes beat Bishop Montgomery, and San Marcos beat Louisville. Round 2: Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks (27-7) vs Hart (17-7); St. Joseph (21-8) vs Westlake (24-3).

Division 3: Notre Dame Academy downed Newbury Park in three sets; Chaminade lost to Village Christian. Round 2: La Salle (22-5) vs Arcadia (16-3); Notre Dame Academy (18-11) vs Saddleback Valley Christian (27-5).

Division 4: Alemany (27-4) beat Los Altos/Hacienda Heights in three sets, and will play Upland (13-10) in the second round.

Division 5: La Reina beat South Hills and St. Paul beat Valley View, both in three sets, while St. Anthony beat Poly/Riverside in four sets. Round 2: La Reina (26-6) vs Costa Mesa (19-6); St. Anthony (18-9) vs Sonora (25-3); St. Paul (22-10) vs Rim of the World (18-5).

Division 6: Bishop Amat beat Hesperia in three sets, and St. Monica lost to Brentwood. Round 2: Bishop Amat (27-7) vs Aquinas (10-9).

Division 7: Pomona Catholic edged Garden Grove in five sets, but Mary Star lost to Heritage Christian, and Cantwell-Sacred Heart lost to Foothill Technology. Round 2: Pomona Catholic (16-8) vs Century (20-3).

Division 8: Providence/Burbank beat Bishop Diego in three sets, but Bishop Conaty-Loretto lost to Buckley, Cornelia Connelly to Azusa, and St. Mary’s Academy to Rolling Hills Prep. Round 2: Providence (14-7) vs Nordhoff (10-9).

Division 9: Sacred Heart beat Calvary Murrieta and Holy Family beat Dunn, both in three sets, but St. Monica Academy lost to De Toledo. Round 2: Sacred Heart (15-2) vs Orangewood Academy (20-8); Holy Family (17-10) vs Southlands Christian (20-7).

Second round matches are scheduled Nov. 2, quarterfinals Nov. 4, and semifinals Nov. 7. The finals will be announced at a later date.
