Deacon Fermin Herrera died Saturday, August 30, 2024.

Fermin Herrera was born in Mexico City, on July 7, 1951, to Pedro and Carmen Herrera. Fermin met his future wife, Olga Arreguin Hernandez, in 1970, and they were married on November 6, 1971.

Fermin and Olga came to the Los Angeles area with their daughter Maria Isabel in 1985. Fermin worked for Paraclete High School and Sacred Heart School, both in Lancaster, in facilities & maintenance, until his retirement in 2013. He was always fascinated by how things worked, and from a young age would take things apart to learn how they worked. If something was broken, he could always fix it.

Fermin and Olga entered diaconate formation in 2005, and Fermin was ordained on June 12, 2010.  After ordination, Deacon Fermin was assigned to serve in his parish of Sacred Heart Church in Lancaster, CA. Deacon Fermin and Olga served together strongly with baptisms, weddings, funeral vigils & gravesides, quinceañeras, and RCIA.

Deacon Fermin is survived by his wife of 53 years, Olga, their daughter, Maria Isabel Galindo, Israel Galindo (son-in-law), and their grandchildren Alejandro and Sofia Galindo.

Deacon Fermin will be remembered for always serving others, being a supportive husband, a loving father, and a patient grandfather.  He was the leader of his family’s strength and faithfulness to God and was a smart and wise man who gave his life in service to his family and others. He had a strong sense of humor and always liked to joke and make people smile.

A Mass will be held Thursday, Sept., 26, at 1 p.m. at Mission Hills Mortuary, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills, CA 91345. Another Mass will be held Friday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m., at Sacred Heart Church, 565 W. Kettering St., Lancaster, CA 93534.  Priests and deacons wishing to attend are invited to vest in an alb and white stole.
