Sister Carolyn Glynn died Dec. 28, 2023, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Mar. 21, 1935 in Malden, MA to Allen F. and Caroline Rooney Glynn and was baptized Caroline Ann.
Sister Carolyn entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jul. 22, 1953 and was given the name Sister John Michael. She professed Final Vows on Jan. 23, 1961. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, a master’s degree from DePaul University and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. Of her 70 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as a primary teacher for 22 years in several states across the country. In California, she worked at St. Therese in Alhambra from 1961-64 and Good Shepherd in Pacifica from 1977-78.
In 1980, having completed a degree in ministry, she served in parish ministry for 12 years in the Chicago archdiocese and then 7 years in the diocese of Venice, FL. Retiring from parish work but remaining in Florida, she became a literacy instructor and also a citizenship instructor for the next 16 years.
Sister Carolyn was a talented, gracious woman. She strived to live in the present moment, giving herself wholeheartedly to an individual in need or the ministerial task at hand. Her generosity and kindness were apparent to all.
Sister Carolyn survived by three sisters, Elizabeth Hannon of Novato, CA, Rosemary Baglio and Florence Ryan both of Malden, MA and two brothers, Timothy Glynn of Malden, MA and Allen Glynn of Dorsett, MA. She is preceded in death by a brother, John Michael Glynn.
The wake is on Tuesday, Jan. 16, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the Wake Service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Terry Johnson presiding. The DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements. Cremains will be buried in the Sister of Providence plot at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, MA.
