Fr. Jose A. Ortiz

Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 8 at Epiphany Church, South El Monte, for Father Jose Ortiz, 75, a retired priest of the archdiocese who died Sept. 26.

Ordained on March 19, 1966, in El Salvador, Father Ortiz had ministered in the archdiocese since 1989 and was incardinated here in 1999. He had served as associate pastor at Epiphany until his retirement. Previous assignments included associate pastorates at Our Lady of Guadalupe (Hammel), Los Angeles; Athanasius, Long Beach; St. John the Baptist, Baldwin Park; Sacred Heart, Pomona; St. Francis of Assisi, Fillmore; and St. Alphonsus, Los Angeles. Interment will be in El Salvador.

Fr. John Shetler

Funeral Mass was celebrated July 29 at St. John Neumann, Irvine, for retired priest Father John Shetler, 84, who died July 22.

Trained at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, Father Shetler was ordained May 3, 1957. He began his ministry at St. Anne Church, Santa Ana, followed by assignments in Altadena and Montrose. In 1974, he moved to St. Killian Church in Mission Viejo. He served a year at Our Lady Queen of Angels, Newport Beach in 1978 and was subsequently named pastor at Santiago De Compostela in Lake Forest.

After a second term at St. Kilian (1985-90), Father Shetler was assigned to St. John Neumann in Irvine, where he remained for the next 18 years. An expert in Latin and Church history, he was also a leader in the charismatic renewal. Father Shetler was concerned about helping the Church grow, and he encouraged people to express their faith with vigor and enthusiasm during his 57 years of priestly ministry. He is buried at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Orange.

Jose Luis Martin

Funeral Mass was held July 16 in Mexico City for Jose Luis Martin, 60, who died July 15 after a long illness. Surviving family members include his wife, Tita Samaniego de Martin; children: Alonso and Jose Luis Martin, Jr.; and his brother-in-law, Jesuit Father Eduardo A. Samaniego.
