The CIF-Southern Section baseball playoffs began early this week with wild card play, preceding first round action that began May 22-23. Results will be updated as soon as possible online.
The baseball schedule:
—Division 1 (May 21, Wild Card): Chaminade beat West Ranch 5-0; Mater Dei beat Valley View 7-4; Crespi beat Long Beach Poly 6-2; Alemany beat Saugus 5-4.
—Division 1 (May 23, first round): J.Serra vs. Brea Olinda; Loyola vs. Corona; Santa Margarita vs. Mission Viejo; Mater Dei vs. Capistrano Valley; Crespi vs. Agoura; Alemany vs. Riverside Poly; Chaminade vs. Foothill.
—Division 2: Damien defeated St. Joseph/Santa Maria, 3-2 in a May 20 Wild Card game, then lost Crescenta Valley 6-1 in a May 22 first round game.
—Division 3 (May 21, Wild Card): West Covina beat St. Paul 6-1.
—Division 3 (May 23, first round): Serra vs. Loara; Bishop Amat vs. Elsinore; La Salle vs. Redondo Union.
—Division 5 (May 21, Wild Card): St. Bernard beat Azusa 4-0.
—Division 5 (May 23, first round): Mary Star vs. Whittier Christian; Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary vs. Jurupa Hills; Paraclete vs. Maranatha. St. Bernard vs. Arroyo.
—Division 6 (May 22, first round): Santa Clara beat Bloomington Christian 10-9; Providence beat Hesperia Christian 9-3. In the second round May 27, Santa Clara will play Desert Christian, and Providence will play Pasadena Poly.
—Division 7 (May 23, first round): St. Monica Academy vs. Desert Chapel.
Softball
In softball, Catholic schools moved into the quarterfinals in Division 3 and 6, with Division 6 guaranteed to produce at least two Catholic school semifinalists (six of the eight remaining teams are Catholic schools). This week’s results include the following:
—Division 1 (May 20, first round): Etiwanda defeated Rosary 5-2; Riverside Poly beat Mater Dei 3-2. Murietta Valley beat Santa Margarita 8-2 in wild card play.
—Division 3 (May 19, Wild Card): La Salle beat Quartz Hill 5-3; Bishop Amat defeated Lancaster; Arcadia beat St. Joseph/Lakewood 7-1.
—Division 3 (May 20, first round): Warren beat Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks 2-0; Alemany beat Carter 18-6; St. Paul beat Mira Costa 7-1; Chaminade beat Sunny Hills 5-3; Burbank beat La Salle 1-0; Bishop Amat beat Burbank Burroughs 6-3.
