Several Catholic high school boys and girls basketball and soccer teams in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are atop their respective divisional polls in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section rankings as of Feb. 3.

CIF-SS 5A: Bellarmine-Jefferson (2) 

Bellarmine-Jefferson’s varsity will take on San Gabriel Academy at Staples Center on Feb. 12, 3 p.m. The Guards then get to stick around to see the pros play as the Los Angeles Clippers take on the Portland Trail Blazers at 7:30 p.m. The team, their fans and their families and friends get two for the price of one as part of the Clippers’ Play Where the Pros Play: Pregame Court Time program for youth and high school basketball teams.

“I’m not sure that the players will really understand the thrill and excitement of this Staples Center game until they step out onto the court,” said Coach Julian Andrade. “It definitely is a special and memorable moment that the players can share for the rest of their lives. We are so glad that the student body will be able to come out and support this special event.”

Ticket prices range from $15 to $55 for both games. Students, parents and friends also have the option of taking a bus to and from school to the Staples Center.

Marymount’s varsity and junior varsity soccer teams, in preparation for Sunshine League playoff action, are in first place with an undefeated varsity and two wins and one tie from the junior varsity in league play.

In varsity action, Emma Seaman (Pacific Palisades) and Alex Marmureanu (Beverly Hills/Church of the Good Shepherd) have been consistent in helping the Sailors to victories, especially in the team’s defeat over the CIF Div. IV No. 3-ranked Torrance team. Most recently, the varsity team defeated Ramona Convent 4-0 with Marmureanu scoring two goals and Jenny Drew Garabedian (Hancock Park) and Danielle Dibie (Sherman Oaks) each adding one.

Pascale Williams (South East London) and goalie Isabelle Hiedewohl (Redondo Beach/St. Lawrence Martyr Church) have proved to be solid and reliable players in junior varsity action. Williams has scored at least one goal in almost every game and Hiedwohl made five saves in a 1-1 tie versus Brentwood. Recently, the Sailors defeated Marlborough 2-0 on goals by Williams and Nicolette LaPorte (Manhattan Beach/American Martyrs Church)
