Sister Mary Schlehuber, OP, died June 22, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Manor, Footville, Wis. Her religious name was Sister Mary Ania. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, July 7, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Mary made her first profession as a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa Aug. 5, 1948, and her perpetual profession Aug. 5, 1951. She taught for 29 years and then served as chaplain for 26 years. Sister Mary then volunteered for nine years. She was warm and able to be present to the needs of those in front of her. Former students remember her as a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend. She served in Illinois, Wisconsin and California.

In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Sister Mary taught at All Saints, Los Angeles, 1973-1975 and 1976-1978. She ministered as a chaplain at St. John's Health Center, Santa Monica, 1978-2004, and volunteered at St. John’s Health Center and St. Monica Parish, Santa Monica, 2004-2013.

Sister Mary was born April 27, 1928, in Peoria, Ill., the daughter of Clarence and Veronia (Scanlon) Schlehuber. Her parents; a sister, Eileen Swanson-Herb; and three brothers, Donald Schlehuber, Clarence “Bud” Schlehuber, and Robert Schlehuber preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Claire Reilly; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared nearly 75 years of religious life.
