Deacon George Asmar died Friday, July 3, 2020. Deacon George served in both the Latin and Coptic rites. He began as a Eucharistic Minister and after being ordained, he held baptism and marriage preparation classes and performed baptisms while serving at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Los Angeles. He led prayer services and brought the Holy Eucharist to the homebound, to hospital patients and to the elderly living in senior assisted and independent living facilities, while serving at both Immaculate Heart of Mary and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Santa Clarita.

In the 1990s, Deacon George was instrumental in the founding of Saint Mary Coptic Catholic Church, the first Coptic Catholic Church in Los Angeles. He remained closely involved with the Coptic Church for over 25 years while also being an active deacon at Immaculate Heart and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Deacon George was a widower at the time of his passing. His wife, Rose-Marie Asmar, predeceased him on September 1, 2014. He is survived by his four children, Amir, Michael, Nader and Samar and 4 granddaughters, Elyse, Brianne, Danielle and Melissa.
