Funeral Mass was celebrated April 24 in Havertown, Pa., for Franciscan Friar of the Atonement Art Johnson, 64, who died on March 26 at a skilled nursing home in Florida. 

A Pennsylvania native, Father Johnson was formerly assistant director for Ecumenical & Interreligious Affairs for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. In 1999, he was elected Minister General of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, serving their ministries in the U.S., Canada, Japan, England and Italy. Earlier, he was president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation Center in Saranac Lake, N.Y.

He entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in 1970, and was ordained a priest in 1977. He earned a Master’s in Educational and Pastoral Ministries from Emmanuel College in Boston; a Master’s in Theology from Catholic University in Washington; and a certificate in Alcohol/Drug Studies from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Agnes “Bernice” Elewaut

Funeral Mass was celebrated April 23 at Mission San Buenaventura in Ventura for Agnes “Bernice” Earhart Elewaut, 96, who died April 16. She was the mother of Father Tom Elewaut, pastor of Mission San Buenaventura, who presided at the funeral.

She is also survived by her children Barbara Wagstaff, Rosemary (Jeffrey) Pietrowski, Robert (Lorraine) Elewaut and Richard (Teresa) Elewaut; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; a sister and a sister-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Internment was at Santa Clara Cemetery, Oxnard. Donations may be made to Holy Cross School, Ventura; Bishop Garcia Diego High School, Santa Barbara; or St. Joseph High School, Santa Maria.
