Sharp shooting enabled Loyola Marymount University’s women’s basketball team to run its winning streak to three with an 84-77 win over Pepperdine on Jan. 18.
The victory in Malibu — made possible by 52 percent shooting from the field, overcoming 48 percent from the free throw line — brought LMU’s season mark to 7-13 overall (3-4 West Coast Conference).
Against Pepperdine, the Lions bolted to a 21-13 first quarter lead, saw the Waves cut the deficit to one at halftime, trailed by five midway through the third quarter, then scored 10 straight points for a 55-50 lead they would never relinquish. The Waves cut the lead to one with 1:41 to play, but LMU held Pepperdine scoreless the rest of the way, converting enough free throws to seal the win.
For LMU, Chelsey Gipson scored 27 points, Ciera Ellington 18, Raychel Stanley 16 and Asayn Adams 11, while Jasmine Jones had 10 rebounds, and Ellington and Stanley each had seven. For Pepperdine, former All-CIF star Paige Fecske, a redshirt senior from Chaminade, scored 25. The Lions now travel to the Northwest for games at Portland Jan. 23 and Gonzaga Jan. 25, before returning home on Jan. 30 to play St. Mary’s.
