Soccer: J.Serra, SG Mission, Loyola play for regional titles

ThernJ.Serra and San Gabriel Mission girls’ soccer team and the Loyola boys’ squadrnwill will for CIF Southern California Regional Soccer titles March 10,rnfollowing semifinal victories March 8.

Inrna thrilling Division 1 overtime encounter, J.Serra defeated Santa Margarita 4-2rnon penalty kicks, after the teams tied 1-1 in regulation (and after they had dividedrnthree earlier matches — a win for each and a tie — prior to Thursday’s match).

J.Serrarn(25-1-2) will play Baseline League champion Upland (21-3-1) at 4 p.m. March 10rnin San Juan Capistrano for the Division 1 Regional title. On Dec. 28, J.Serrarndefeated Upland 2-1 on penalty kicks after the Lions and Highlanders played torna scoreless tie in regulation.

SanrnGabriel Mission, which hasn’t lost in two months, knocked off Orosi 3-1 in arnDivision 5 semifinal as sophomore Isabella Lopez scored twice and juniorrnHavanna Garcia once.

Inrnthe 4 p.m. title game March 10, the Pioneers (30-1-2) will play third-seededrnFillmore (19-5-2), which won the CIF-SS Division 7 title. San Gabriel Missionrnwon D-7 in 2017 before moving up to, and winning, D-6 in 2018.

Inrnthe boys’ Division 1 tournament, Loyola — on a goal by Sean Traylor with threernminutes remaining — edged its Los Angeles neighbor Cathedral 2-1. Aidan Cuevasrngave Loyolan early 1-0 lead, but Cathedral freshman Diego Barahona tied therngame for Cathedral with nine minutes left, before Traylor converted therntie-breaking tally.

Thernwin earned the Cubs (24-3-6) the right to play San Clemente (19-5-6) for thernchampionship on March 10, 4 p.,m. in San Clemente. The Tritons, winners of thernSouth Coast League, gained the final with a 3-1 upset of top-seeded SantarnBarbara, which had beaten Loyola and Cathedral to win the CIF-SS D-1rnchampionship.
