Mater Dei finished second in the CIF/WSCGA Team Qualifier Tournament held Nov. 1 at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard, advancing to the CIF/WSCGA Team Final on Nov. 8.

In the Individual Finals held concurrently with the team event, the Monarchs’ Khameryn Utu and Rosary Academy’s Chayse Gomez tied for seventh with 72s, two shots off the four-way tie for first, to lead all Catholic school players.

As a team, Mater Dei’s 383 was 20 strokes behind first-place Troy. In addition to Utu, the Monarchs were represented by Jessica Jiang and Kailee Welch (76 each), Kexin Guan (77), Hannah Kerekes (82) and Kaitlyn Vasquez (85), with the top five scores counted.

The CIF/WSCGA Team Final will be played Nov. 8 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, followed by the State Championships on Nov. 14.

Girls’ tennis

Six Catholic school teams reached the second round of the CIF-SS Girls’ Tennis Team Tournament after first round victories on Oct. 31 (and, in two cases, wild card wins on Oct. 30).

In first round play, Santa Margarita defeated El Dorado while Mater Dei lost to M.L. King (D-1); Chaminade beat Sunny Hills (D-2); and all three Catholic teams in D-3 — Mayfield, St. Lucy’s and Louisville — were beaten.

In D-4, unbeaten Bishop Montgomery won, and Alemany lost. And in D-5, La Salle, Bishop Amat and Notre Dame Academy all won, the latter by outscoring St. Bonaventure 72-65 in games, after they tied 9-9 in sets.

Second round action on Nov. 2 includes the following:

  • D-1: Santa Margarita (19-6) vs. Marlborough (11-3).
  • D-2: Chaminade (9-4) vs. Ruben Ayala (14-3).
  • D-4: Bishop Montgomery (15-0) vs. Bolsa Grande (13-6).
  • D-5: La Salle (12-2) vs. Patriot (17-3); Bishop Amat (13-4) vs. Century (17-2); Notre Dame Academy (11-8) vs. Rubidoux (11-6).

Wild card winners on Oct. 30 included Mayfield (D-3), and Bishop Amat and Notre Dame Academy (D-5), while Villanova Prep lost its D-5 match.

Boys’ water polo

In the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals held Nov. 1, Loyola (21-6) beat Santa Margarita, 11-8, and will play Harvard-Westlake in the semifinals Nov. 7. Mater Dei lost to Oaks Christian, 6-4 in overtime.

In Division 2, Baseline League champion Damien (22-7) won its first-round match Oct. 31 over Orange Lutheran 13-7, and advanced to play in the quarterfinals Nov. 3 against Dana Hills (19-11).

In D-3, Servite (18-9) beat Troy 18-2 in the first round, then topped Malibu 14-7, in the second round, and will play San Marcos in the quarterfinals on Nov. 3. Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks beat Montebello 15-8, in the first round, but was edged by Costa Mesa, 8-7, in round 2.

And in D-7, Cathedral (13-9) walloped Moreno Valley 19-4 in the first round, and will play Paloma Valley (17-6) in the quarterfinals Nov. 3.
