After a scoreless tie in regulation, Loyola Marymount University Lions men's soccer team needed less than three minutes of the first overtime session to win its West Coast Conference opener Oct. 12, 1-0 over Gonzaga at Sullivan Field.
Sophomore Dylan Shockey, a graduate of J.Serra High School in San Juan Capistrano, notched the game-winner — his first of the season — with assists from Brandon Sanchez and Duhany Williams at the 92:37 mark. Goalkeeper Jacob Jackson posted his seventh shutout of the season for Lions.
It was the fourth overtime game in the last five matches for LMU (6-3-3 overall, 1-0 WCC), which this week plays its last non-conference match of the year against Marshall (Oct. 15) and a WCC battle with Portland (Oct. 19), both 7 p.m. matches at Sullivan Field.
Women’s Soccer
Loyola Marymount University’s women’s soccer team (3-8-2, 1-1 WCC) split its conference matches last week by identical 1-0 scores, winning in San Francisco Oct. 9 but losing at home to Pepperdine Oct. 13.
A second half penalty kick by Amber McCorkle in the 56th minute was the difference against USF — the second game-winner in as many matches for McCorkle, a freshman from San Diego. Goalkeeper Sadie Kenny recorded her second shutout in the last three games, and matched her career high with five saves.
Against Pepperdine, however, a red card late in regulation left LMU a player short, and the Waves scored with less than six minutes remaining in the second overtime for the victory. Kenny recorded six saves as LMU put up a fierce battle despite being outshot 19-8.
The Lions play at San Diego Oct. 19, then return home to play Gonzaga Oct. 23.
