Off to its first-ever 7-0 start, the Loyola Marymount University men's basketball team closes out its season-long three-game homestand Nov. 29 against Bethesda University of Anaheim at Gersten Pavilion.
Among the factors contributing to the Lions’ unbeaten record is their ability to knock down free throws. LMU ranks fourth among Division 1 teams with an 81.1 percent mark from the line, and senior guard James Batemon leads the country in free throws made with 53 (88.3 percent), including an 11-for-11 performance in the 71-63 win over Florida A&M on Nov. 24.
Free throws were also key in LMU’s 76-74 win over Central Connecticut State Nov. 21. The Lions rallied from a late deficit to score seven unanswered points in the final 49 seconds, the last two on Zafir Williams’ free throws that broke a 74-74 tie. Batemon led the Lions with 26 points.
After Saturday, LMU travels to Pauley Pavilion for a Dec. 2 game against UCLA, then to Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 5.
Women’s basketball
The annual Education Day game at Gersten Pavilion saw LMU (5-1) earn a 60-53 victory over UC Davis. Chelsey Gipson scored 16 points, Bree Alford 12 and Jasmine Jones 10 plus a game-high 14 rebounds to lead the Lions.
The women cagers next play at Denver on Dec. 1 and at Cal State Northridge on Dec. 7.
Women’s soccer
The WCC’s 2018 Women's Soccer All-Academic Team includes LMU seniors Shelby Cormier and Emma Tyrnauer, the latter for the second time.
Additionally, senior Samantha Jordan, juniors Emily Carman, Kallie Kampfl, Ali King and Melissa Lewis, and sophomores Chloe Colbert and Jackie Fiacco earned All-Academic Honorable Mention recognition.
