Mater Dei’s 1-0 defeat of J.Serra last week moved the Monarchs up several places in the CIF-SS girls’ soccer rankings issued Jan. 21.

The Jan. 16 Trinity League victory left Mater Dei 14-1-1 on the season and third in the Division 1 poll, up from seventh last week. J.Serra, the three-time defending D-1 CIF-SS champions, dropped from second to fifth, even before its 3-1 loss to unranked Santa Margarita on Jan. 21.

With playoffs approaching next month, Mater Dei is 5-0 in league play, ahead of Santa Margarita (3-2) and J.Serra (2-3).

Elsewhere in girls’ soccer, Santa Clara remained second in Division 7, and Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy climbed back into third in D-2.

In boys’ soccer, several Catholic school teams inched upward. Cathedral remained second in Division 1, but Loyola continued its upward climb into third with Mater Dei now fifth behind top-ranked San Clemente. St. John Bosco and St. Genevieve also advanced in their divisions.

In girls’ water polo, La Salle took over the No. 1 ranking in Division 7, while Rosary held on to No. 2 in Division 3 and 7. Other previously ranked teams held their standing.
