With league play underway and playoffs approaching quickly, several Catholic school girls’ volleyball teams are battling for high seeds in their upcoming divisional tournaments.

The CIF-Southern Section Divisions 1 & 2 poll issued Sept. 30 lists Marymount (16-1) second and Mater Dei (16-3) third, trailing No. 1 Redondo Union (21-3) which has wins over both Catholic school powerhouses. Entering this week, the Sailors are 3-0 in the Mission League while the Monarchs are 3-0 in the Trinity League.

Interestingly, Maxpreps’ Xcellent 25 national poll shows Marymount second and Mater Dei third, trailing No. 1 Cathedral Catholic of San Diego (17-3) with Redondo Union 11th.

In Division 3, La Salle remained second for the fifth straight week (behind Ontario Christian), and Notre Dame Academy jumped into eighth, its best showing of the season. St. Anthony rose from seventh to sixth in D-4, but in D-5 La Reina moved up from sixth to fifth while Chaminade dropped from fourth to seventh.

Mary Star of the Sea rose from eighth to sixth in D-6, with St. Bonaventure now tenth; Ramona Convent stayed at No. 3 in D-8; and Santa Clara dipped from sixth to seventh in D-9.

Listed just outside the rankings are Santa Margarita (D-1&2), Providence of Burbank (D-6), Sacred Heart (D-7) and St. Monica Academy of Montrose (D-8).
