Mater Dei, Marymount, Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks, Bishop Montgomery and St. Anthony all advanced to the next round of the Southern California Regional portion of the CIF State Championship Girls’ Volleyball Tournament.

In the eight-team Open Division’s first round matches on Nov. 7, Mater Dei beat Long Beach Poly 25-27, 25-20, 25-20, 25-19, while Marymount beat Sierra Canyon 25-17, 25-18, 26-24. In the Nov. 10 semifinals, top-seeded Mater Dei plays No. 4 Redondo Union, and No. 3 Marymount goes against No. 2 Torrey Pines.

The other divisions all began the regionals with 16 teams in beach bracket.

In Division 1, both local Catholic schools rallied from behind to force a hard-fought fifth set, but only No. 8 Notre Dame (23-9) came out on top, beating No. 9 San Clemente 27-25, 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 17-15. No. 14 St. Joseph/Lakewood lost to third-seeded Scripps Ranch, 25-20, 26-28, 25-23, 16-25, 17-15.

In the Nov. 8 quarterfinals, Notre Dame (23-9) plays No. 1 Temecula Valley (20-7).

No. 15 Bishop Montgomery (23-13) upset second-seeded Exeter, 29-27, 25-20, 25-19, in Division II, and will play No. 7 Garces Memorial (30-9) in the quarters.

In Division III, ninth-seeded St. Anthony (23-11) beat Taft 25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 27-25, and will play No. 1 Ontario Christian (35-2).

And in Division IV, No. 16 Villanova lost to No. 1 San Luis Obispo 25-18, 25-5, 25-13.

Semifinals in all divisions are Nov. 10 and regional finals Nov. 13.
