The Alemany Warriors proved a most unwelcome host for Jordan High School of Sandy, Utah, trouncing the Beetdiggers 62-36 in the 2019 season opener played Aug. 16 in Mission Hills.

Alemany jumped to leads of 20-7 at the first quarter and 34-14 at halftime, and never looked back. The Warriors travel to Gilbert, Arizona for an Aug. 24 contest against Higley HS.

In the only other action involving Catholic schools, St. Genevieve lost its season opener Aug. 16 to Poly of Pasadena, 28-7, in a game played at Valley College. The Valiants host Arleta on Aug. 24.

Initial rankings

As expected, the first CIF-Southern Section weekly poll of 2019 (issued Aug. 19) shows Mater Dei and St. John Bosco ranked one-two in the combined Divisions 1 and 2 category, with fellow Trinity League schools J.Serra fifth and Servite tenth.

Alemany is eighth in D-3; Loyola eighth and Damien tenth in D-4; and St. Paul sixth and St. Bonaventure eighth in D-5.

Also listed as teams to watch just outside the top ten in their divisions are Cathedral (D-3), St. Anthony (D-9), Salesian and St. Genevieve (D-11), St. Bernard (D-13) and Mary Star of the Sea (D-14).
