Another sterling performance by Christian Grubb of Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks highlighted the Catholic schools’ performances at the CIF Masters Meet held May 18 at El Camino College.
Grubb, who excels in football as well as track, won the 100 and 200 meter dashes, as he had the previous week at the CIF-SS championships, and will look to repeat his performance at the CIF State Championships May 24-25 in Clovis. Grubb has run the tenth-fastest time in the 100 (10.4) and seventh-fastest 200 (20.62) nationwide this year.
Peter Herold, J.Serra’s distance-running star, won a thrilling 1600 meter race in 4:11.38, with his teammate Anthony Grover finishing third. Herold also was third at the 3200 meters.
Loyola’s Will O’Brien won the boys’ pole vault (15 feet 3 inches). Also qualifying for the boys’ state meet by finishing in the top six of their event or by meeting or beating the state qualifying standards were:
Sprinter Asjah Atkinson of St. Anthony and distance runner Audrey Suarez of Mayfield, both sophomores, won their events in leading several Catholic school qualifiers to the State Championship.
Atkinson won the 100 meter hurdles (14.08) and was third in long jump, while Suarez surged at the end of a back-and-forth 1600 to win in 4:45.04, a state best and school record.
Serra’s Jazmyne Frost was second in the 100 and fourth in the 200, and her teammate A’Lena Chaney was sixth in long jump. Sydney Bentley of St. Bernard took third in the 400; Ry’ann O’Bannon of St. Joseph/Lakewood was fourth in high jump; Tessa Green of Santa Margarita was fifth in the 100; Jazmine Jackson of Chaminade was fifth in the 100 meter hurdles; and Santa Margarita’s 4x100 relay team was sixth (Green, Olivia Guida, Lauren Memoly and Makena Eddy).
