Trinity League rivals Santa Margarita and J.Serra were among five Catholic school teams advancing to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section boys’ team tennis playoffs, following first-round wins on May 9 and 10.

In Division 2, J.Serra defeated Tesoro 74-63 in games won, after tying 9-9 in sets. Santa Margarita edged Sunny Hills 10-8. In second round matchups May 11, Santa Margarita meets Walnut, and J.Serra (whose only loss this year was to Santa Margarita) opposes Buckley.

In Division 3, Damien downed Mayfair 12-6, and will play Whitney in the second round.

In Division 5, Bishop Montgomery defeated Valley Christian/Cerritos 73-57 in games after tying 9-9 in sets, and Bishop Amat beat Garey 11-7. Second-round matches on May 11 find Bishop Montgomery against Serrano, and Bishop Amat opposing Alta Loma.

Other Catholic schools did not fare as well in the first round. University beat Loyola 16-2 in D-1, Poly/Pasadena beat St. Joseph/Santa Maria 15-3, and Canyon/Anaheim beat St. Francis 11-7 in D-2; and Santa Fe stopped La Salle 14-4 in D-5.

Quarterfinal matches are May 14, semifinals May 16, and finals May 18 at Claremont Club, Claremont. The CIF Southern California Regional Team Tournament takes place at Claremont Club, with quarterfinals and semifinals May 25, and finals May 26.
