Crespi and Loyola High Schools finished sixth and seventh to lead local Catholic schools in the CIF Boys’ State Swimming and Diving Championships, held May 19 at Clovis High School.

The Celts scored 94 points, led by sophomore Zach Van Zandt (third in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 200 free) and senior Hayden Liu (fourth in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 200 individual medley). Both also swam on the third place 200 free relay team, with seniors Jack Chen and Sergey Ternov (the latter, 14th in the 500 free).

Each of Loyola’s three relay teams scored points, including the fourth-place 400 free relay team of juniors Connor Lee, Mark McCrary and Emmett Pernecky, and sophomore Nolan Wang. Lee also placed fourth in the 100 butterfly and 12th in the 50 free, while McCrary was ninth in the 100 backstroke.

Also earning a share of the Cubs’ 87 points were the eighth place 200 medley relay team of McCrary, juniors James Lee and Nicholas Turrill, and senior Lachlan Bonesteel, and the 14th place 200 free relay team of Connor Lee, Wang, Pernecky and Bonesteel.

Servite was 27th with 23 points as junior Chris Martinez was eighth in the 50 free, then anchored the 11th place 200 free relay team with junior Matt Kuehl and seniors Christopher Canlas and Porter Bruce.

Damien scored eight points when junior Preston Planells was 12th in the 200 IM, and Santa Margarita picked up four points as junior Nicholas Leavell was 13th in diving.
