Boys’ soccer: Cathedral, Mater Dei, Bishop Diego reach semis

Cathedral and Mater Dei will meet in the semifinals of the Division 1 Catholic CIF-Southern Section boys’ soccer playoffs, after winning quarterfinal matches Feb. 13.

The second-seeded Phantoms (20-2-2) outlasted Mission Viejo, winning 4-2 on penalty kicks after tying 1-1 in regulation. The sixth-seeded Monarchs (17-1-6) toppled Wilson/Long Beach 2-1, and play at Cathedral Feb. 16, 6 p.m.

No. 1 Loyola, however, was upset, 1-0, by No. 8 Edison, ending the Cubs’ season at 24-2-2.

Also advancing to the Feb. 16 semifinals was Bishop Diego (14-3), which beat Vasquez 4-2 in the quarters and will host San Dimas (9-1-7) at 1 p.m. in Santa Barbara.

Salesian lost its D-3 quarterfinal match, 1-0 at West Torrance, while in D-4 Damien was beaten 1-0 by Troy. And in D-6, Santa Clara lost a heartbreaker to La Puente, 8-7 on penalty kicks, following a 1-1 regulation tie.
