Nine baseball players from local Catholic high schools — enough to field a team — were selected to the All-CIF-Southern Section first teams in their respective divisions for 2018.
Announced June 25, the selections included three repeat choices from 2017:
Senior pitcher-infielder John Jackson of Serra/Gardena in Division 3, a first team choice in Division 3 last year. A star wide receiver on the Cavaliers’ football team last fall, Jackson hit .449 and posted a 2.91 earned run average.
Senior pitcher-infielder Ryan Gervais of St. Bernard and junior pitcher-third baseman Andrew Donini of St. Anthony in Division 6, where they were first team choices in 2017. Gervais hit .385 with a 1.31 ERA for the Vikings, and Donini slugged .486 with a 3.86 ERA for the Saints.
Also selected were the student athletes below:
Division 1: Junior pitcher-infielder Blake Archuleta of Bishop Amat and senior pitcher Christian Ciuffetelli of Servite. Archuleta, quarterback of the Lancers’ football squad, hit .360 with a 2.87 ERA, and Ciuffetelli had a 0.72 ERA and a no-hitter in 2018.
Division 2: Senior catcher Noah Cardenas of Alemany, a .444 hitter in 2018.
Division 6: Junior pitcher Gabe Arteaga of Bishop Diego, also a lineman on the Cardinals’ football team, who batted .385 this season with a 0.63 ERA and 5-0 record.
Division 7: Junior pitcher-shortstop Robbie Treto of St. Genevieve and senior pitcher Beau Barry of St. Monica Academy/Pasadena. Treto slugged .432 with 19 RBIs in 22 games for the Valiants; Barry threw a near-no-hitter this year in leading the Crusaders into the postseason.
